We often talk about “blazing a trail” but we sometimes forget that a trail is only useful if there is someone following behind, ready to learn from the steps already taken. This past week, we witnessed that connection in its purest form during our 14th Annual Senior Career Day held at South Mountain Community College
There is a unique energy created when seasoned professionals—our dedicated Career Mentors—sit across from bright, ambitious seniors who represent the future of our community. This was more than a networking event. It was a meaningful exchange of wisdom, a candid look at the professional world, and a bridge between where our
students are now and where they are headed.
The Power of the “Story”
One of our core expectations for mentors is simple: tell your story.
Not just the highlights but the reality. Students often see success and imagine a straight path to the top.
What they truly need and what our mentors delivered are the honest stories: the setbacks, the pivots, the lessons learned along the way.
When a mentor shares what they would do differently, they offer something far more valuable than a business card they offer a roadmap that includes the potholes.
Throughout the day, students rotated through three breakout sessions, engaging with professionals from diverse industries. By the end of the morning, each student had explored topics ranging from entry-level salaries and education requirements to the daily realities and long-term rewards of various career paths.

A Day of Connection and Insight
Our agenda was intentionally designed to maximize meaningful interaction:
- Breakout Sessions: Three rotations gave students the opportunity to learn directly from professionals who have walked the path before them.
- Keynote Inspiration: We were honored to welcome Danielle Frost from The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, whose message emphasized the power of community and the opportunities that come with curiosity and thoughtful questions.
- Student Reflection: We closed the day by asking students what they learned—because at Elevate
Phoenix, we believe free information is priceless, and networking is a student’s greatest asset as they step into their future.

To Our Mentors: You are the Difference
