Elevating Reading, Empowering Leaders: Transforming Communities Through Literacy

At Elevate Phoenix, we believe that literacy is far more than just the ability to read—it is the ultimate superpower for personal growth, academic achievement, and lifelong leadership. Over the past six months, our Elevating Reading for Academic Success Program has brought this vision to life in extraordinary ways, touching the lives of thousands of students across our community.

None of this transformative work would be possible without strong community partners who share our dedication to youth development. We extend a huge thank you to the Literary Foundation of the Southwest for their incredible generosity and support of our program. Their investment has enabled our students to build vital reading skills while discovering their own power to lead.

Over 3,500 Youth Impacted and Growing

Over the past six months alone, more than 3,500 youth have benefited directly from this initiative. Through a life-skills-based reading curriculum taught inside their classrooms, students gained essential tools to improve their reading comprehension, build vocabulary, and connect literature to real-world experiences.

The results speak for themselves:

  • Hundreds of books and e-books read across all grade levels.

  • Measurable improvements in overall literacy skills and academic confidence.

  • Deeper community roots built through shared learning experiences.

However, the real magic of the Elevating Reading for Academic Success Program lies in what happened when our students took those classroom lessons a step further.

Student Leadership in Action: Full-Circle Peer Mentorship

Our middle and high school students didn’t just learn the curriculum—they stepped up to lead. Once a week, dozens of these inspiring young leaders rolled up their sleeves, created original lesson plans based on what they learned, and brought those lessons into our partner elementary schools.

As peer mentors and teachers, these older students modeled a love for reading while offering guidance, encouragement, and real-world connection to younger youth. Watching a middle or high school student confidently guide an elementary school student through a story creates a powerful, full-circle momentum that elevates both the mentor and the mentee.

Keeping the Momentum Going All Summer Long

Learning didn’t stop when the traditional school bell rang. Throughout our summer programming, many of these same peer mentors volunteered their time to lead interactive reading activities, host fun reading contests, and keep younger students engaged.

By turning literacy into a dynamic, community-wide adventure, these mentors proved that reading is not just an academic requirement—it is a pathway to confidence, connection, and joy

Writing the Next Chapter Together

From classroom breakthroughs during the school year to lively summer reading challenges, our youth are demonstrating every day that education is the foundation of effective leadership.

We are deeply grateful to the Literary Foundation of the Southwest for standing alongside Elevate Phoenix. By empowering over 3,500 young people to read, teach, and inspire one another, we aren’t just improving test scores… we are launching the next generation of educated, confident, and compassionate leaders.
