Investing in Tomorrow: A Reflection on Our 14th Annual Senior Career Day

We often talk about “blazing a trail,” but we sometimes forget that a trail is only useful if there is someone following behind, ready to learn from the steps already taken. This past week, I witnessed that connection in its purest form during our 14th Annual Senior Career Day held at South Mountain Community College.

There is a unique energy that fills a room when you bring together seasoned professionals our Career Mentors and the bright, ambitious seniors who represent our future leaders. It is more than just a networking event; it is a vital exchange of wisdom, a reality check on the professional world, and a bridge between academic life and the careers that await.

The Power of the “Story”

One of the core expectations we set for our mentors is not just to list their achievements, but to tell their story. We asked them to dive into the “glamour vs. reality” of their fields. It’s easy for a student to see a successful business owner or a creative professional and imagine a linear path to the top. However, the true value lies in hearing about the obstacles and setbacks.

When a mentor shares what they would do differently if they had to do it all over again, they provide our seniors with something far more valuable than a business card—they provide a roadmap that includes the potholes. Our students participated in three distinct sessions, rotating between tables to engage with mentors across various industries. By the end of the morning, each student had the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of professionals, hearing about everything from entry-level salaries and schooling requirements to the daily grind and the ultimate benefits of a chosen career path.

A Day of Connection and Insight

The agenda for the day was designed to maximize these high-impact interactions:

  • The Breakout Sessions: Three dedicated sessions allowed students to rotate and “glean as much as they can” from those who have walked the path before them.

  • Keynote Inspiration: We were honored to have Danielle Frost from The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation join us for lunch as our keynote speaker. Her insights reinforced the importance of community and the “new opportunities” that arise when you have an open mind and a thought-provoking question.

  • Reflection: We closed the day by asking our seniors what they learned. At Elevate Phoenix, we believe that “free information is priceless,” and networking truly is a student’s best friend as they enter this new stage of life.

To Our Mentors: You are the Difference

To the professionals who shared their tables with students throughout the day: thank you. We know how busy your schedules are, and taking the time to share the knowledge and wisdom you’ve acquired is a profound act of service. You didn’t just talk about jobs; you shared your start, your steps, and your advice for those following in your footsteps.

Your willingness to provide materials, offer information on current internships, and explain eligibility criteria gives our students a tangible head start. You are helping us fulfill the Elevate Phoenix mission by investing your most precious resource your time into the next generation.

Gratitude for our Partners

An event of this type is only possible through the collective effort of our community. A special thanks goes out to Shasta Pools, Carlisle Company, and both our Elevate Executive and Development Boards. Your support ensures that we can continue to provide these life-changing opportunities for our students.

As we look toward the future, we are reminded of the charge we gave our seniors at the start of the day: Challenge yourself to learn something new from every career field you encounter. If this event showed us anything, it’s that when we connect our “future leaders” with the “trailblazers” of today, the possibilities for our community are limitless.

Thank you for being a part of this journey.

Looking Forward: Investing in Our Shared Future

As we step into a new year, we do so grounded in gratitude and strengthened by unity. The success of the past year is not just our success—it is yours. It belongs to every donor, every volunteer, and every partner who refused to give up on our kids.

We are inspired by the reminder that when we invest in our kids, we invest in the future of us all. Our journey doesn’t end with a year-end report; it begins again with every new student who walks through our doors. Thank you for believing that our kids are worth it.
